How To “Self-Care” When You’re Going Through It
There are times when we feel like we “just can’t”.
The idea of taking time for meditation, to run a bath, or do a full hour of exercise seem all too daunting and would require too much energy.
As a result, we end up not doing anything at all. I wish I could say that helps long-term, but unfortunately, it doesn’t.
That said, there are small steps we can take to care for ourselves that are rooted in self-compassion and giving ourselves grace.
I’ll highlight a few examples here:
Deciding on what you’re going to wear the night before.
Drinking enough water.
Sitting in front of your doorsteps for some fresh air.
Connecting with a loved one.
Listening to your favorite song or podcast.
Prioritizing enough sleep.
Decluttering an area of your home.
Taking deep breaths for a few minutes.
Properly nourishing your body.
Playing video games.
Reflecting on things that you are grateful for.
Praying or speaking to a higher power.
Forgiving yourself.
Writing down your thoughts.
Asking for help when you need it.
Creating a budget and tracking it.
Taking small steps as a start to your daily routine: brushing your teeth, your hair, or changing your clothes.
Setting healthy boundaries.
Simply put, self-care is the ability to care for yourself, by being aware of your needs, being able to regulate and process your emotions, and by having confidence in yourself to take on life’s challenges.
As you’re taking on small steps towards caring for yourself, keep in mind that the ultimate goal is to maintain optimal health and well-being.
