Family Therapy in Ottawa & Ontario | Therapyw with Empathy

You can feel the tension before anyone says a word.

One person walks into the room and the whole mood changes. Everyone gets quiet. You watch what you say because you don’t want to start something.

Maybe your family fights all the time. Someone makes one comment at dinner, someone else takes it the wrong way, and suddenly you’re arguing about something that happened years ago.

Or maybe your family doesn’t fight at all. You just don’t talk about anything. Everyone knows there’s a problem, but no one wants to bring it up.

You love your family, but being around them can be exhausting. You’re tired of walking on eggshells. You’re tired of being stuck in the middle. And you’re tired of every birthday, dinner, or holiday ending with someone upset.

You don’t want to cut everyone off. You just don’t want things to keep going like this.

Family therapy gives you a place to talk about what’s been happening and work through the things your family hasn’t been able to fix on its own. We help you talk without another fight, set limits with each other, and find a better way to move forward as a family.

If they’re upset, everyone knows it. Plans change. People get quiet. Someone tries to make them happy. Nobody wants to be the person who makes things worse.

After a while, the whole family starts changing what they do based on how one person feels.

Family Therapy helps your family stop walking on eggshells and build healthier boundaries.

Questions About Family Therapy

How do we know if we need family therapy?

You don’t have to wait until your family is falling apart.

If you keep having the same fights, no one knows how to talk about what happened, or being together has become stressful, family therapy can help.

Sometimes you just know, “We can’t keep doing this.” That’s enough reason to reach out.

What if one family member doesn’t want to come?

That happens a lot.

Not everyone has to be ready at the same time. You can start with the family members who want to come and work from there.

Even when one person doesn’t come, changing how the rest of the family talks and responds to each other can make a difference.

Is it normal to feel exhausted after seeing my family?

Yes. Family time can take a lot out of you when you’re always watching what you say, trying not to upset someone, or keeping the peace.

You leave the visit and feel like you need the rest of the day to yourself.

Therapy can help you understand why being around your family feels so draining and what needs to change.

How do I set boundaries with parents who won’t listen?

Start by being clear about what you will and won’t accept.

Your parents may not like your boundary. They may get upset or try to make you feel guilty. That doesn’t mean you have to give in.

Therapy can help you figure out what you want to say and what you’ll do when your limits aren’t respected.

Can family therapy help adult siblings get along?

Yes.

You can be 30, 40, or 50 years old and still fall right back into old roles when you’re with your siblings.

Old fights about who was the favourite, who had it harder, or who Mom always sided with can follow you into adult life.

Family therapy gives you a place to finally talk about those things and find a different way to be around each other.

What if our family problems go back 20 years?

It’s not too late to talk about them.

You can’t change what happened 20 years ago, but you can change what happens now.

Therapy can help your family talk about old hurt, understand why the same problems keep coming back, and decide what needs to be different going forward.

Can family therapy help us make decisions about aging parents?

Yes.

Deciding who will help Mom or Dad, where they’ll live, who will handle appointments, or how things will be paid for can bring up a lot of stress.

It gets even harder when siblings don’t agree.

Family therapy gives everyone a place to talk through those choices without falling into the same old fights.

How do we stop walking on eggshells around one person?

When everyone is worried about how one person will react, the whole family starts changing how they act around them.

You stay quiet. You give in. You avoid certain topics because you don’t want to set them off.

Family therapy can help you stop letting one person’s reaction decide what everyone else can say or do.

Is family therapy only for families in a big crisis?

No.

You don’t need to wait for a huge fight or for someone to stop speaking to the family.

Families come to therapy because they want to talk better, work through old hurt, set better limits, or get through a hard change together.

You can ask for help before things get worse.

What if I feel guilty for wanting space from my family?

Wanting some space doesn’t mean you don’t love your family.

Sometimes you need to say no, leave early, answer the phone later, or spend less time with someone.

Therapy can help you figure out what feels right for you without feeling like you’re a bad son, daughter, sibling, or parent.

What happens in a family therapy session?

First, we’ll talk about what’s been happening and what your family wants help with.

Everyone gets a chance to speak. Your therapist helps slow things down when the conversation gets heated and makes sure one person doesn’t take over the whole session.

From there, we work on the problems that brought you in and find better ways to handle them outside of therapy too.

How do we start family therapy with your Ottawa team?

Start with a free 20-minute call.

Tell us a little about what’s been going on and who you’d like to come to therapy. You can also ask any questions you have before you book.

We’ll help you find a therapist who fits your family and schedule.

You don’t have to keep waiting for things to change.

You’ve tried talking about it. You’ve let things go. You’ve told yourself the next conversation, visit, or family event will be different. But the same problems keep coming back.

You don’t need everyone to agree on who’s right or wrong before you come to therapy. You just need to know that something needs to change.

Family therapy gives you a place to have the conversations that haven’t worked at home. We help your family say what needs to be said, hear each other differently, and figure out what needs to happen next.

ADHD

ADHD is more than just trouble focusing. It can make it hard to manage your time, handle your feelings, stay organized, and finish daily tasks.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

You might lose track of time or put things off, even when you care about them.

You may start lots of projects but not finish them.

Simple tasks can feel overwhelming, and it might feel like you’re always trying to catch up or forget important things.

Your feelings can change quickly or feel very strong. You might get frustrated easily, feel extra sensitive to criticism, or feel hurt by rejection.

Many people with ADHD feel like they have to work much harder than others just to keep up, which can make them very tired or doubt themselves.

HOW THERAPY HELPS:

Therapy can help you find ways that work for your brain. You’ll learn easy tricks for getting organized, managing your time, and handling big feelings.

Therapy can also help you feel better about yourself, even if you’ve felt “behind” or not good enough for a long time.
